Book Details
Complete Book of Tarot: The idea of a tarot card having ‘dignity’ comes from the Order of the Golden Dawn and is based on the philosophy of the four elements. When we speak of a card having dignity, we are referring to the card’s rank or relative importance with respect to the other cards in a spread. This topic can be a bit complicated, and beginners may wish to skim this section and return to it later when they have a better grasp of the cards.

Complete Book of Tarot: Card 3, near future: Three of Coins. This card might refer to seeking a creative solution in cooperation with others.

Complete Book of Tarot: The earliest Italian tarot decks varied in the number and arrangement of cards. The so-called Visconti-Sforza decks contained images of members of the wealthy Milanese Visconti and Sforza families dressed in their finest attire. The cards themselves are beautiful works of art; more than a dozen such decks can be found in various museums, libraries, and private collections around the world. These card decks may have been used to play the trick-taking game of trionfi (trumps).

Complete Book of Tarot: In the seven-card layout discussed previously, one might ask what effect the Tower (a Fire card) has in the reading. Since the Tower (Fire, hot + dry) lies between a Sword (Air, hot + wet) and a Wand (Fire, hot + dry), the Tower’s influence is enhanced but not overwhelmingly so, as would be the case if the Tower were flanked by Fire cards on each side. The ‘wet’ of the Air card to the Tower’s left cancels the ‘dry’ of the Fire card to the Tower’s right, leaving some ‘hot’ from the Air card to enhance the Fire of the Tower. In this reading, the querent might expect some sort of moderately disruptive unexpected occurrence, symbolized by a slightly strengthened or ‘hotter’ Tower card.
