47-Knight of Cups – Reversed Rider Waite Deck

Your Chosen Card – Knight of Cups Reversed Rider Waite Deck

When reversed, the seductive Knight of Cups casts his spell so convincingly that you don’t realize you are walking about in an illusion. You may think he really cares about you, but in reality he is using his charm for his own ends regardless of how it affects you in the long run. The reversed Knight of Cups is the archetypal Don Juan of classical literature. He will mislead or seduce you into providing him with momentary pleasure. Don’t expect a committed relationship. Forewarned is forearmed.

Keywords Reversed: Escapism, illusion, deception, passivity, hedonism, impracticality, fraud, trickery, artifice, seduction, superficiality, boredom, dishonesty, unreliability, breach of confidentiality, mind-expanding drugs; a con artist, a Don Juan; ‘wham, bam, thank you, ma’am.’

Decans/Timing: 20 Aquarius–20 Pisces. Tropical, 09 February–10 March; sidereal, 04 March–03 April
Astrology: Fire of Water.
Associated Trumps: The Star and the Moon.

Book Details
Complete Book of Tarot: Astrology: The stern taskmaster Saturn (debilitated) in the first decan of fiery Leo, realm of the Waite King/Thoth Prince of Wands (Air of Fire) and Strength (Leo). Saturn is linked to the World. The Golden Dawn regarded this decan as the beginning of the zodiac.

Tarot Books

Creative Tarot: Designing my own deck, the Spolia tarot, with my amazing collaborator Jen May, a collage artist from Brooklyn, has given me a whole new understanding of the cards. You will find illustrations from our deck here in this book. The history and meaning of each card was researched extensively before it was designed, and I’m very proud of the result.

Complete Book of Tarot: With tongue in cheek, in my book Tarot Beyond the Basics I compared reversed cards to reversed rolls of toilet paper. Some people prefer toilet tissue to emerge over the top of the roll and others prefer to draw it from the bottom. 20 Regardless of whether you pull your paper from the top or the bottom, each roll of toilet paper serves the same function. With tarot cards, however, being upside-down can make it harder for you to see what’s going on, so you may need to adjust the card to appreciate its meaning more fully. In a similar way, a reversed tarot card in a reading may imply a need to adjust to a situation or expend extra effort to appreciate what’s happening.

Tarot Triumphs: The scene is a marketplace in Northern Italy. It’s in a small seaside town and has just a few canopied stalls set out, serving locals and holidaymakers alike. The year is 1972. I scan the stalls, and my eye is caught by an old lady standing erect behind her table, her hands busy spreading out a pack of Tarot cards. I can see that they are a local type known as Tarocchi in these parts, brightly colored and a little smaller than the cards I am used to.
