44-Nine of Chalices – Reversed Salem Deck

Your Chosen Card – Nine of Chalices Reversed Salem Deck

When reversed, the Nine of Cups suggests an excessive focus on material pleasures and conspicuous consumerism. Such superficial behavior makes you come across as smug and complacent. Success can be a two-edged sword: it can grant all your wishes, but it can also turn you into a grown-up version of an egocentric spoiled child.

Book Details
Portable Magic: This set of correspondences has stood the test of time, and has much to recommend it. I have no hesitation in using it as the foundation for Tarot magic since I believe that it is, in the main, correct. However, it should not be regarded as perfect or unchangeable. Aleister Crowley did not think it so, even though he accepted the teachings of the Golden Dawn as a received higher wisdom. In his own work on the Tarot, The Book of Thoth, he made an inversion of the associations of the trump the Star with those of the trump the Emperor, to correct what he perceived as an imbalance in the Golden Dawn arrangement of correspondences. He did not take this step on his own authority, but followed the directive of his holy guardian angel, Aiwass, who made the statement in a work psychically received from the spirit by Crowley that ‘Tzaddi is not the Star’ (see Crowley, The Book of Thoth, 9; also his The Book of the Law, 26) .

Tarot Books

Complete Book of Tarot: When upright, the Nine of Cups indicates a period of pleasure, creativity, and enjoyment. Wishes are fulfilled and dreams come true. This is a time of material happiness and success in mundane matters. You feel particularly creative and sociable at this time. Your many blessings are cause for celebration and sharing your happiness with others.

Tarot for Beginners: Reversed, this card may be revealing self-doubt, a lack of self-discipline, or some other weakness. You may be avoiding dealing with difficult emotions like anger and are therefore prevented from moving past an obstacle. The inclination to run away rather than risk confrontations will ultimately cause more harm than it’s worth. Alternatively, you may be being advised to curb baser instincts, such as overindulgence in food or drink.

Reversed Cards: Here in the retrograde aspect, we see Jupiter and Leo lighting the path to victory. But it’s only the path. This is important to remember. As Jupiter retrogrades, you will need Leo’s fire to burn brightly as you put in the time, energy, and effort to bring yourself into the vortex of success. When this card shows up in your reading, just know that you are not there yet. You are close, but you are missing something. Maybe you have not managed to get all your wands working together, or perhaps your foundation is not as strong as it needs to be to support your growth. Whatever it is, correct the issue and then watch the blessings of the upright and direct Jupiter come to pass.
