The Empress is an archetype of feminine power; she is watery, hard to fathom, mysterious, fertile, and sexual. She augurs a need for us to be in touch with our feminine side, to listen to our intuition, and to give priority to our emotions and passions. The Empress does not play by the rules. She has her own way of doing things and her own idea of what is right and what is wrong in any and all endeavors. That doesn’t mean she will always get her way, but she is a reminder not to ignore your creative and intuitive side. She can signify coming abundance but don’t make the mistake of thinking that that will always mean financially. There are many types of wealth and richness in life and money is only one of them. The Empress can encompass any or all of them.

Reversed Cards: The Empress is without a doubt one of the most powerful women in the tarot. Unlike the queens, who only have kingdoms at their beck and call, the Empress has an empire. This level of abundance is echoed in the number that rules her, the three. The three in numerology is the number of manifestation. It rules trinities and has magical and spiritual significance. It is also a number of extremes. When threes are happy, they express joy in the deepest most profound way, and when they are out of power or sad, they fall into the pits of despair. Think of a three like a see-saw: when one side is up, the other is down, and they are both balanced by the piece in the middle, which is ironic because threes crave the sort of balance they are unable to achieve. Here in the reversed aspect of the Empress, we see the struggle for balance play out in all her extreme moods, personalities, and aspects. Just don’t be fooled into thinking she doesn’t know what she is doing, for the Empress is very aware of her actions and even more aware of their consequences.

Creative Tarot: While Mathers might have standardized the deck’s layout, Waite and Smith standardized its imagery. Their deck is typically called the Rider-Waite, but it should be called the Rider-Waite-Smith because Smith was at the very least an equal partner in its creation. Almost every deck on the market today follows its templates of imagery and meaning. The major exception is the Thoth tarot, designed by Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris and taking its name from the Egyptian god of knowledge, which uses the Princess instead of the Page and switches the placement of Strength and Justice, along with some other noticeable changes. But by far, the Thoth deck has not had the reach of the Rider-Waite-Smith.

Tarot Triumphs: The first series of seven comprises the Magician, the High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor, the Pope, the Lover, and the Chariot. They can be seen as cards of being. We can become any one of those characters and take on their roles. They have the simplicity of intention and a personal power that equates with basic human drives.
