Career, Work Or Retirement:

You may very well feel trapped in a job that you detest but can’t see your way clear to leave because of the security. Consider whether or not the trade-offs are worth it; the truth of the matter is that in this day and age, very few jobs, pensions, etc. and so forth are truly secure. If you choose to stay where you are; be aware that this is a choice that you are making, nothing has been foisted upon you. If you don’t feel the trade-off is worth your unhappiness, start putting out feelers and giving thought to what you can do to change the situation. You are not trapped unless you allow yourself ; to be trapped.

The Devil is not as frightening a card to interpret as the depiction on most cards indicates. It is a card about bondage but often this bondage is metaphoric and internal. With this card ; you are called to look beyond superficial appearances and to go deeper into the truth and meaning of a situation. You also are asked to remember that ; when you’re feeling restrained you nearly always hold the keys to your own freedom. Don’t give up hope!

Tarot Triumphs: Many thanks to Richard Smoley and Tony James for reading drafts of this text and making valuable suggestions. This helped me more than they probably realized in setting the book on the right track. And I warmly thank my agent, Doreen Montgomery, as always, for her unfailing support and encouragement. Most especially, I thank my husband, Robert Lee-Wade, for taking on the task of creating exquisite line drawings of the Tarot cards to accompany this book. This was time out from his usual art of painting in oils, but it fulfilled a dream that we had when we first met on board a ship that one day we would create a book together.

Elements of the Psychic World: In German folklore a kobold is an ugly, mischievous and occasionally evil spirit. The name comes from the German word meaning ‘evil spirit’ and is often translated in English as goblin. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they were usually depicted in paintings as little devils with a conical hat, pointy shoes, a hairy tail and bald feet in place of hands.
