71-Eight of Patens – Upright Salem Deck

Your Chosen Card – Eight of Patens Upright Salem Deck

When upright, the Eight of Disks shows a craftsman perfecting his skills and working diligently to do an excellent job. This is a card of training and apprenticeship with the goal of honing one’s abilities to produce a quality product. There is much satisfaction in attending to details and doing things well, even if it takes several attempts to get it right. The artisan on the card is willing to put in the necessary time and effort. He understands the need to be patient and allow things to mature properly rather than try to rush the process. Traditionally this card refers to an amiable and modest peasant girl who approaches her chores diligently without complaint or pretension, as symbolized by the sign of Virgo associated with the card.

Complete Book of Tarot: The offspring of a sculptor father and a midwife mother, Socrates developed what we now call the Socratic method of leading his students to wisdom. Instead of imparting information, Socrates asked penetrating questions that provoked his students to come up with their own answers. Following his mother’s lead, Socrates viewed himself as a midwife of the mind, opening passages through which the knowledge inherent in the human soul could emerge into the light of day. As we follow his lead in seeking wisdom, it is useful to record thoughts and reflections in a journal.

Complete Book of Tarot: When reversed, the Eight of Pentacles suggests that you may not be putting in the needed time and effort to do a job well. Maybe you don’t care about producing a quality product, or maybe you are cutting corners just to get the job done. Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Although there may be a short-term gain in your current approach, in the long run you are likely to feel a sense of dissatisfaction. When the storm arrives, it’s comforting to know you have put something away for a rainy day.

Reversed Cards: The Eight of Pentacles is ruled by the sun. As we know, the sun doesn’t have a retrograde cycle, nor does it go backward in any way, shape, or form. It does, however, eclipse, flare up, and change its intensity with the seasons. It also disappears at night, meaning it allows for rest. If you have received the Eight of Pentacles in the retrograde aspect, it may be time to take a break. Stop burning and blazing for a moment and rest. Turn out the lights and let the darkness embrace you as you allow your body to regenerate before the sun comes up once again.
