68-Five of Disks – Reversed Thoth Deck

Your Chosen Card – Five of Disks Reversed Thoth Deck

When reversed, the Five of Pentacles suggests a reluctance to fulfill a commitment when the going gets tough. The idealism of young love comes into conflict with harsh reality, making it difficult to stay together when confronted with financial loss, ill health, or other trying circumstances. Rather than attempt to reconcile differences and make your emotional ties more satisfying, you are inclined to give up and seek satisfaction elsewhere. In essence, you may be deciding to leave your partner out in the cold, or you may find yourself undergoing such an experience.

Keywords Reversed: Marital difficulties, financial setbacks, job loss, dissipation, dissolution of a loving relationship, infidelity, misconduct, illicit love affairs, lack of commitment, absence of support, abandonment to the slings and arrows of fortune, fair-weather friendship, unfulfilling relationships, material trouble, financial loss, unexpected expenses, hardship, begging, unemployment, worry, disquiet, stress, strain, feeling pressured, troubling thoughts, neediness, fear of poverty, destitution, squandering resources, profligacy.

Timing: 0 Taurus–10 Taurus. Tropical, 21 April–30 April. Sidereal, 14 May–24 May.
Astrology: Nimble and clever Mercury in the first decan of earthy Taurus, realm of the Waite King/Thoth Prince of Pentacles (Air of Earth) and the Hierophant (Taurus). Mercury is linked to the Magician. [The church window is a reference to the Pope and the sacrament of marriage. Fickle Mercury brings instability to the earthy solidity reflected in Taurus and the King of Pentacles, thus exposing the marriage to fluctuations in its material security.]
Number Symbolism: 5 – instability, disruption, crisis, loss, tension, conflict.

Etteilla: A lover, spouse, paramour, mistress, friend, person in love; concord, suitability, decorum; to love and to cherish; (R) misconduct, trouble, disorganization, disorder, wasting, dissipation, consumption.

Book Details
Complete Book of Tarot: The idea of a tarot card having ‘dignity’ comes from the Order of the Golden Dawn and is based on the philosophy of the four elements. When we speak of a card having dignity, we are referring to the card’s rank or relative importance with respect to the other cards in a spread. This topic can be a bit complicated, and beginners may wish to skim this section and return to it later when they have a better grasp of the cards.

Creative Tarot: The images of the tarot hew closely to images from fairy tales, from the kings and queens and knights to Rapunzel’s tower. The Five of Coins could be retold as “The Little Match Girl,” the King of Coins could be related as the story of King Midas, and so on.

Complete Book of Tarot: Unfortunately, complete sets of these early tarot cards no longer exist. The Pierpont-Morgan Bergamo deck, produced in 1451, originally consisted of seventy-eight cards. The Cary-Yale deck, which may be the oldest extant set of tarot, probably contained eighty-six cards in all. At some point, card makers decided to limit the ‘standard’ tarot deck to seventy-eight cards comprised of twenty-two trumps, forty numbered pip cards, and sixteen court cards, as we have today.

Complete Book of Tarot: As a second illustration, consider the Two of Cups, which was the first card to which the counting method guided us from the querent’s significator, the Knight of Wands. In this spread, the Two of Cups (Water, cold + wet) lies between a Cup (Water, cold + wet) and a Sword (Air, hot + wet). The ‘cold’ of the Cup on its left cancels the ‘hot’ of the Sword on its right, leaving an extra amount of the quality of ‘wet’ to enhance the already ‘wet’ property of the Two of Cups. Thus, we might expect the Knight of Wands to go with the ‘wet’ flow and lose himself in the relationship suggested by the ‘wetter’ Two of Cups.
