The ancient Chinese text, said to date as far back as the tenth century BC, is similar to the tarot, except that it uses tiles or coins rather than tarot cards, and a large book that helps you interpret the patterns formed when you conduct a reading. Cage would ask a question about the composition he was working on, cast the tiles, and then use the answers found in the book to make changes to the music.
