43-Eight of Chalices – Reversed Salem Deck

Your Chosen Card – Eight of Chalices Reversed Salem Deck

When reversed, the Eight of Cups cautions you to be thoughtful about a temptation to abandon your current life circumstances in search of greener pastures. You may be feeling dissatisfied with some aspect of your life, but now may not be the optimal time to walk away from difficulties; it may be wiser to try to resolve problems in your current situation. If you run away from troubles, you may take them with you because they are of your own making. The grass may not be greener on the other side. Ponder the words of Eric Samuel Timm: ‘We are often unaware of the gradual decline and the erosion in our lives but not unaware of the gnawing feeling it brings.’ 41

Portable Magic: This set of correspondences has stood the test of time, and has much to recommend it. I have no hesitation in using it as the foundation for Tarot magic since I believe that it is, in the main, correct. However, it should not be regarded as perfect or unchangeable. Aleister Crowley did not think it so, even though he accepted the teachings of the Golden Dawn as a received higher wisdom. In his own work on the Tarot, The Book of Thoth, he made an inversion of the associations of the trump the Star with those of the trump the Emperor, to correct what he perceived as an imbalance in the Golden Dawn arrangement of correspondences. He did not take this step on his own authority, but followed the directive of his holy guardian angel, Aiwass, who made the statement in a work psychically received from the spirit by Crowley that ‘Tzaddi is not the Star’ (see Crowley, The Book of Thoth, 9; also his The Book of the Law, 26) .

Tarot Books

Complete Book of Tarot: When upright, the Eight of Cups indicates that you have surveyed your current situation and it no longer feels emotionally satisfying. Because of this dissatisfaction with circumstances, you have decided to move on in search of greener pastures. Perhaps a project or a relationship has not lived up to expectations. You may be feeling ‘stuck in the mud’ and wanting to look for fulfillment elsewhere. The bottom line is that you are seeking greater joy and happiness because it does not appear to be available in your present circumstances. It is important to determine whether your discontent is based on a valid assessment of your situation or whether you are acting on some illusory notion, for instance, that blonds have more fun.

Tarot for Beginners: Reversed, this card may be revealing self-doubt, a lack of self-discipline, or some other weakness. You may be avoiding dealing with difficult emotions like anger and are therefore prevented from moving past an obstacle. The inclination to run away rather than risk confrontations will ultimately cause more harm than it’s worth. Alternatively, you may be being advised to curb baser instincts, such as overindulgence in food or drink.

Reversed Cards: It may not seem like a positive thing to have the card of victory show up in the protection aspect, but it really is. When we are beginning a new cycle or project, sometimes it is best to keep things to ourselves. Even the good bits. Oftentimes it is to keep others from contaminating the energetic vortex we are creating, and other times it is because we are in the process of rebuilding our own reserves of self-esteem. If this card has shown up in the protection aspect, it is reminding you to not stop, not give up, and keep building on all the breakthroughs. Each step brings you closer to your dreams or goals.
