Family, Friends & Relationships:

In general, this card can point to very deep emotional issues that must be addressed before the querent can move on. Denying pain does not make it go away (any more than denying a broken leg makes it heal.) However, attention must be paid to balance here also as it must be paid with The Two of Swords. Allow yourself to experience any pain that comes up now, but do not wallow in it. You do not and should not wallow in grief or sorrow for long. However only you can decide how long is long enough. Others can’t decide it for you.

Card Meanings: Sorrow, Upheaval, Serious Misunderstandings, Disorder, Sadness, Alienation, Absence, Division, Loss, Depression, Loneliness, Unhappiness, Disillusion, Conflict, Confusion, Removal, Distraction, Trauma, Civil War, Upset, Grief, Heartache, Betrayal, Heartbreak, Separation, Broken Relationship, Ill-Health

Regardless of the way that the Three of Swords card is depicted, know that it is not all bad. Although there is an element of sorrow that is undeniable when this card appears, what lies on the other side of this sorrow can be enhanced understanding and joy. Allow yourself to fully experience any sorrow or pain that comes up now, so that you can move beyond it.

Reversed Cards: The Three of Swords is linked to the planet Saturn. Saturn is the planet of limit and restriction. In the upright position, we could explore the limit of Saturn being expressed via grief or sorrow, but here we see it’s blocked. There is no way to release it from this position. You are locked in. You made your decision in the Two of Swords, and now you are stuck with that decision here in the blocked aspect. And guess what? It sucks! It is causing you all sorts of pain and anguish. But under Saturn’s cruel gaze, you are going to have to suck it up and just get on with it. Despite how much pain this is causing you right now, you have no choice but to see it through to the end.

Complete Book of Tarot: Many readers pull a daily card at random as a focus for contemplation. There is nothing special about drawing a new card each day. If your ‘daily’ card seems particularly meaningful, feel free to ponder it for several days before moving on to another card. If it feels irrelevant, you are free to choose a different card for the day. My own practice is to keep a tarot deck on my desk so that I can shuffle the cards and draw one whenever the spirit moves me. The following suggestions may be helpful for your daily draw:

Complete Book of Tarot: When upright, the Devil suggests that you have an opportunity to pursue activities that provide intense pleasure and satisfaction. This card often appears when we are contemplating a project requiring an almost obsessional devotion to achieve a material ambition. The Devil cautions us to maintain balance in our lives as we eagerly pursue this goal and not to allow excessive attachment to material temptations to lead us astray.
