Romance, Love Or Relationships:

When The Empress appears in a love-related reading, you could suddenly find yourself being pursued by several prospective Lovers. If you are in a committed relationship, this card reminds you even when reversed to pay particular attention to your intuition about the relationship. Again, the message of The Empress is to trust your instincts and your intuition, and follow your heart. If you do not you will one day regret it.

Card Meanings: Inaction, Overbearing Tendencies, Lack Of Confidence, Infertility, Anxiety, Insecurity, Infidelity, Disharmony, Lack On Concentration, Lack Of Growth, Vacillation

The Empress is an archetype of feminine power; she is watery, hard to fathom, mysterious, fertile, and sexual. She augurs a need for us to be in touch with our feminine side, to listen to our intuition, and to give priority to our emotions and passions. The Empress does not play by the rules. She has her own way of doing things and her own idea of what is right and what is wrong in any and all endeavors. That doesn’t mean she will always get her way, but she is a reminder not to ignore your creative and intuitive side. She can signify coming abundance but don’t make the mistake of thinking that that will always mean financially. There are many types of wealth and richness in life and money is only one of them. The Empress can encompass any or all of them.

Elements of the Psychic World: Dolphins and humans have had a special bond for centuries. Swimming with dolphins is thought to have remarkable healing benefits, especially for those suffering from learning difficulties. In the words of the Greek essayist Plutarch: ‘The dolphin is the only creature that loves man for his own sake.’ Indeed, dolphins are highly intelligent animals that appear to enjoy human company for its own sake, perhaps enjoying the observation of our antics and as much as we do theirs.

Reversed Cards: Manifestation energy does not like to be blocked. It gets very unhappy when it cannot create all the wonderful things it can imagine, and this is exactly how you and the Empress are feeling, like someone is standing on the hose of your creation energy. Like someone somewhere is denying you what you are screaming you want and need. The only problem is it’s not someone else—it’s you. Somewhere in the energy of the Empress, she is torn, not truly convinced that the thing she claims she wants will bring her the experience she craves. This conflict is blocking her power and obscuring her vision. In other words, she is not totally in love with the things she wants to create. This is how it works for threes. If they can’t feel it in the extreme energy of their heart, they can’t create it. Instead, they remain blocked and frustrated. So take a minute and think about what it is you are claiming you want or need. Place your hand over your heart, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself, ‘Am I in love with this person, thing, idea, or situation? Does it really fill me with joy? What is it distracting me from?’ When you have your answers, don’t ignore them. Use them to turn this card around and get you back into the abundant flow of the Empress and the power of the three.

Creative Tarot: I lined up these stories with a tarot card that describes a similar situation. Standing up for what you believe in is a Seven of Wands kind of thing, and so I placed it there. Perhaps if you draw the same card during a reading, you can use that person’s story as an inspiration for you to find the same strength. Losing a manuscript and needing to start over is the destructive element of the Tower. Dealing with disappointment and humiliation corresponds with the Five of Cups.

Tarot Triumphs: The six cards along the central line (nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are often the most intriguing, as the pairings spark off against one another. Here we may find alliances, conflicts, and striking combinations of energies. What might the Empress be doing with Justice, for instance? Is a woman who abuses her power about to get her just deserts? Or will a woman who has perhaps been rather weak now find her inner strength and fight for justice? These are just two of the ways in which a pairing can generate meaning, and you’ll need to judge it on the overall spread of the cards and the question being asked. This is the place where it all happens, where one’s inner world and external forces collide. Or harmonize. Or form an uneasy alliance. If it helps, you can attribute the left-hand card to the internal side of the situation and the right-hand card to the external situation. This can be a useful aid to reading the pair as a duo.
