Portable Magic: It is not necessary to understand the theory behind the use of the vortex in ritual in order to successfully work Tarot magic. All you need to know is that the purpose of a ritual is represented by the cards you place on top of the triangle, and that during the ritual you focus your intention through the triangle with that purpose strongly held in your mind. Your projected willpower itself opens a vortex to the unmanliest world automatically, but the gateway is facilitated by the shape of the physical triangle of trumps. What is sent into the higher world always returns, immediately reflected to the lower world and realized, though the realization is not always

Creative Tarot: And once she got onstage, all of that painful training paid off. Her movements were effortless. She reached the Nine of Coins stage where a person gets so good at the basics that she transcends them. It is excellence through enduring all of the boring, tedious stuff. It requires patience and hard work, but the payoff is worth it.

Tarot Triumphs: It’s possible that this card could also be a sign of initiation, especially within the general context of myth and tradition. Although I can’t vouch for any historical connection, the collection of myths surrounding the associated goddesses Ishtar from Babylonia and Anahita from Iran carry a startling likeness to the Star. Ishtar is often symbolized as the Morning Star and is sometimes known as the Star of Lamentation; Anahita is the goddess of the heavenly waters that flow from the region of Venus among the stars. In one of the key myths, Ishtar decides to travel to the center of the underworld to fetch the water of life to restore her dead lover, Tammuz, god of the harvest. She passes through seven gateways, leaving behind one of her jeweled adornments at each portal, until she arrives naked at the sacred pool. Here, in this underworld, the souls of the dead are represented by birds.53 This is at the very least a compelling parallel to the scene shown on the Star of the Tarot. Taking this back into the realm of a contemporary Tarot reading, the Star may therefore indicate an inner journey, as opposed to the Chariot, which more often signifies outer forms of travel.

Reversed Cards: In the upright position, we see the full impact of Saturn’s direct power influencing the energy of this card. Here in the retrograde aspect Saturn’s grip has been loosened and things don’t seem as restricted as they once did. This can have both a positive and negative impact on the results you are seeking. When Saturn is away, there is a tendency to slack off and throw discipline out the window. This can allow us to drag our feet and forget that we reap what we sow. On the flip side, without Saturn’s controlling energy dictating our every move, we are free to explore more creative ways to expand, grow, and capitalize on what we are growing and manifesting.
