Elements of the Psychic World: Like many phenomena associated with spiritualism, spirit photography originated in America in the mid-nineteenth century. A man called William Mumler of Boston is credited with having produced the first spirit photographs in 1862 and from this a whole new style of photography blossomed on both sides of the Atlantic. Individuals would sit for photographers, like William Hope, in the hope of seeing the images of dead loved ones (called extras) revealed in the print.
Elements of the Psychic World: Modern interest in the concept of the psychomanteum was triggered by Dr Raymond Moody, who coined the term near-death experience. Moody first became interested in mirror gazing in the late 1980s and began to investigate ancient oracular practices and folklore about mirrors as portals to other dimensions.
