Faith, Spirituality Or Psychic Progression:

Know that spiritual growth is not a competition. When The reversed Five of Wands appears, people may try to convince you that you need to grow a certain way, at a certain speed, and so forth. Know, too, that spiritual growth can involve dealing with and accepting some apparent contradictions. Try to become more comfortable with paradox.

Card Meanings: Reaching Agreements, Extreme Aggression, Suppressed Temper, End Of Conflict/ Row/ Struggle, Battle Fatigue, Intimidation, Harmony, Compromise, Lack Of Competition, War, Finding Solutions, Peace, Shyness, Order, Fear Of Confrontation, Short Fuse, New Opportunities, Generosity, Looking For An Argument, Focus, Control, Cooperation

The Five of Wands often refers to competition. Usually this is in the career/work arena, but sometimes it can refer to romantic rivals. Don’t be afraid of competing, know that you have something to offer, and can be successful. But you have to try, to see results.

Elements of the Psychic World: Apparitions and Thought-Transference (1892); Studies in Psychical Research (1897); Modern Spiritualism (1902); Spiritualism (Pro and Con Series, against Wake Cook) (1903); Biography of Robert Owen (1906); The Naturalisation of the Supernatural (1908); Mesmerism and Christian Science (1909); Telepathic Hallucination; The New View of Ghosts (1909); and The Newer Spiritualism (1910). The only medium to significantly impress Podmore was Leonora Piper, although he did attribute her success to telepathy rather than communication with

Creative Tarot: In the Jungian way, then, our tarot spreads are not random but are guided by the same principle. A particular card will show up because, in some way, we need it to. We are not causing the cards to fall the way they do, but each card is a meaningful coincidence. The fact that we can’t explain why we get the Five of Wands when we’re going through a very Five of Wands situation—a manuscript that comes back with yet another round of extensive edits, or a teacher who frustrates you by pointing out what you’re doing wrong instead of congratulating you on the improvements you’ve made—makes it more meaningful. During a reading I once gave, I decided to use the Golden tarot, despite it not being my usual go-to deck. My client drew the Page of Wands to represent her own self and noticed that the scroll depicted on the card was the exact shape of the tumor they had just found on her kidney. That small coincidence gave the reading a special meaning for her.

Tarot Triumphs: So, in the context of the Tarot Triumphs, this card shows a stirring and quickening of life. What seemed to be dead is shown to live; what has died is reborn, or is about to be reborn in another form. We can apply this trumpet call in a reading to anything from a phone call from an old friend, to an unexpected job opportunity, or indeed a powerful realization that it’s time to wake up to the real meaning of life. It could indicate an impulse arising, a message, or a surprise.

Reversed Cards: It really is hard to picture this card ever giving off the energy of protection, yet for me this card hints at the same need for surrender we find in the Hanged Man: the need to block the physical sense so that other aspects of your inner knowing can be heard and acknowledged. Just like the Hanged Man, the image seems extreme, yet don’t we always wait till something extreme happens to stop looking outside of ourselves to find the answers and solutions that are right inside us? Here in the protection aspect the Eight of Swords wants you to disengage from the physical world, to put yourself at odds with the senses and seek the inner divine knowledge that gets lost under the constant bellowing of the ego.
