Book Details
Elements of the Psychic World: According to Hindu philosophy a guru (from the Sanskritt gu meaning ‘darkness’ and ru meaning light’) is a spiritual teacher who helps dispels darkness and bring pupils to the light. The guru leads and inspires by example, in order to help followers reach enlightenment or self-knowledge. In the West the term is used to describe many kinds of spiritual teachers or leaders.

Creative Tarot: It’s not easy to walk away from disappointment. It is so easy to get stuck. Part of the process of the Five of Cups, however, is to mourn the loss. If we repress our feelings, just shove them down with the help of cake or booze (or cake and booze), or tell ourselves, “What do those jerks know, anyway?” we don’t learn the lesson of why the project flopped. And if we just sink into depression, it’s easy for all production to cease, as we can’t regain the optimism necessary to try again. Somewhere between wallowing and repression is the way out. You cannot allow your grief to turn into depression.

Tarot Triumphs: Lately, for the purposes of researching this book (or so I tell myself), I have bought more packs from the much wider selection of traditional Tarot now available. The Golden Tarot, for instance, is a gorgeous historical reproduction of the fifteenth-century Visconti-Sforza pack, with sensitive restorations of three missing cards. Reproductions of key Marseilles packs, such as the 1701 Madénie and the 1761 Conver Tarots, are also valued acquisitions to my collection.3 But for the purposes of historical study and comparing packs, there is now a wealth of digital imagery available online. The British Museum collection online is an excellent place to start, via a search for Tarot cards in its vast digital photo library. Images can also be emailed to you without charge if they are purely for private study.4 I love to lose myself in the images of historic Tarot packs that I’ve downloaded and printed out. The only cost, although admittedly not cheap, is that of the printing ink.

Reversed Cards: The Knight of Cups is often associated with quests inspired by big dreams. He is moved to action not by how he thinks but by what he feels, for if he feels deeply enough about something, he will be spurred into action. But here in the blocked aspect, his emotions are causing things to grind to a halt. Instead of moving toward his dream, he is caught up in his own fears and doubts. If you have drawn this card, then you too are finding yourself stuck in a cycle of fear and allowing your doubts to derail you.
