68-Five of Patens – Upright Salem Deck

Your Chosen Card – Five of Patens Upright Salem Deck

When upright, the Five of Disks traditionally refers to two people who remain very much in love despite any material troubles they must confront. They take seriously their marriage vows: ‘for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.’ The lovers walking in a snowstorm pass the church where they got married. Despite declining finances and ill health, they remain devoted to each other in a committed relationship. This card indicates the importance of love and mutual support in weathering life’s storms. It shows a willingness to face hardships with a partner in a mutually supportive way.

Keywords Upright: Spiritual solace, seeking financial assistance, mutual support, devotion, pure love, affection, commitment, lovemaking, affinity, concord, reconciliation, married life for better or for worse; ‘no matter what happens, we’re in this together.’

Timing: 0 Taurus–10 Taurus. Tropical, 21 April–30 April. Sidereal, 14 May–24 May.
Astrology: Nimble and clever Mercury in the first decan of earthy Taurus, realm of the Waite Knight/Thoth Prince of Disks (Air of Earth) and the Hierophant (Taurus). Mercury is linked to the Magician. [The church window is a reference to the Pope and the sacrament of marriage. Fickle Mercury brings instability to the earthy solidity reflected in Taurus and the Knight of Disks, thus exposing the marriage to fluctuations in its material security.]
Number Symbolism: 5 – instability, disruption, crisis, loss, tension, conflict.

Crowley/Thoth: Worry, disquiet, material trouble, unemployment, loss of money, strain, inaction, financial worries.

Complete Book of Tarot: The offspring of a sculptor father and a midwife mother, Socrates developed what we now call the Socratic method of leading his students to wisdom. Instead of imparting information, Socrates asked penetrating questions that provoked his students to come up with their own answers. Following his mother’s lead, Socrates viewed himself as a midwife of the mind, opening passages through which the knowledge inherent in the human soul could emerge into the light of day. As we follow his lead in seeking wisdom, it is useful to record thoughts and reflections in a journal.

Reversed Cards: As I mentioned in the beginning of this section, fives don’t have goodness or badness built into them. It really is all about how you perceive the change the fives have swept into your life. This could not be more evident in the blocked Five of Pentacles. You could say you have tunnel vision and are only able to see one outcome to one pressing problem. The reality is that everywhere you turn there are multiple solutions and possibilities. This card reminds us that life doesn’t have to be difficult, but it will be if we choose for it to be.

Tarot Card Meanings: Five of Pentacles; unexpected loss or hardship.  Generally a lack of ability to recognize opportunity and feelings of isolation.  The card is strongly linked to poor investments or unwise use of money in some way.  Reversed; largely the same but with more severe results.
