Finance, Money Matters Or Debt:

When Temperance is reversed, there is still most likely to be a good balance between what is going out and what is coming in money-wise. However, you must not simply sit back and expect the world to suddenly pay you what you are worth and what you deserve. Have the courage to ask for what you need and your money flow will increase.

Temperance is a card about balance, in many ways, and relationships of all kinds. Friendships, family, romantic partnerships, and work partnerships all need your attention. This is also a card about alchemy or mixing and matching. You may have to try several approaches to things before you find what is truly right for you.

Reversed Cards: Temperance is one of the major arcana cards linked to a karmic debt number in numerology, fourteen/five (14/5). In numerology, this karmic debt number is linked to freedom and temptation, which is interesting considering the placement of this card between Death and the Devil. Death itself is freedom, and the Devil knows all about temptation. Yet Temperance sits between them. She mixes her one and four and produces a five, the number of change. Change is in many ways an opportunity for deep healing work, so it is little wonder that Temperance is often seen as a healing card. Karmic debt numbers are also an opportunity for healing. They offer a space to rid oneself of past habits, cycles, and beliefs. They offer a space in which to be reborn, which is often the case after death. Here in the reversal aspect of our karmic debt fourteen/five, Temperance is offering you another chance to change from a different perspective. She is turning herself upside down so you don’t miss any possible opportunities to amend your karmic debt. Just understand that here in the reversed aspect things will be more challenging. Traction will be harder to find, and the allure of Death and the Devil may be more tempting than normal. Regardless of its orientation, though, Temperance offers you the chance to walk the middle path, the road between the temptations. Just keep your eyes open and you too will find it even while standing on your head.

Creative Tarot: Now, coincidence can be seen as being meaningful or not. Certainly Carl Jung—who was a great fan of the tarot and astrology—would see coincidence as meaningful. It is our unconscious guiding our hands; it is an outer reflection of our inner state. He called it synchronicity, or “meaningful coincidence.” Synchronicity can be explained a bit like this: You know how sometimes you are thinking all day long of someone you haven’t heard from in years, and then that person emails or calls you? That is a meaningful coincidence. It wasn’t the power of our thoughts that caused him or her to call us; the coincidence is that both you and this person were moved simultaneously to think of the other, like some impulse springing up from the memory banks.

Tarot Triumphs: Bringing this back to everyday life, I suggest that the Star may symbolize the heart of the matter, the point at which there is no further secrecy or pretense. Here, resistance and defensiveness are dissolved. There is giving and receiving through the outpouring of living water. As with Temperance, this could also be taken as a sign of grace or blessings to be received. But whereas with Temperance the energies are always kept in balance and moderation is the key to a happy flow, here the Star gives all she has, without stinting. In a less propitious sense, this could also mean giving too much in a way that might not benefit the donor or the receiver. If one person is trying to help another, it suggests too that the situation may be delicate and has to be handled carefully. It can be a card of empathy, but, in excess, it could denote a lack of discretion through the tendency to ‘pour everything out.’ Overall, however, the Star is a symbol of brave generosity.
