Romance, Love Or Relationships:

In the context of love, the Six of Swords reversed can show that you are about to confront some necessary issues in order for your relationship to move forward. This does not have to involve fights or arguments, if you communicate calmly and well. This is not a time to hold things in, however, again, think before you start spouting things off. You could cause enormous damage if you are not thoughtful about how you ‘speak your piece.’

Part of the inner lore of the Lord of Science is depicted most clearly on the Ryder Waite deck of Tarot cards, where you will find that a family sits in a small boat, which is being poled across a river by the father of the family. This is a symbolic journey away from the Land of Unreason to the Promised Land (you’ll notice the connection here with the exodus of the Jews from Egypt). And it is within this hidden lore that we can discover much about the influence of the 6 of Swords. Interpretatively, the card indicates a period where the querent is sailing into safe haven after having had a bit of a bumpy ride. There is a sense of tranquillity and ease…..a lifting of burdens….a time for rest and recovery here. The concept of crossing the river is one that turns up again and again in mythology. Psychologically, the river can be taken to indicate the flow of the subconscious, emotional Self, whilst the fragile craft in which we travel may be taken as the strivings we make toward spirituality. This can often be tossed about by rapid flowing, ever-changing feelings…..but in the end, with sufficient determination, we can indeed reach the shores on the farther side of the river.

So, on a day ruled by the Lord of Science, we need to regard ourselves as moving into calmer waters. Problems must be approached rationally, and objectively. Emotional swings will be better curbed than indulged. Thus we shall find new and different solutions to difficulties. We shall see things clearly, get issues into sharp focus and perhaps establish new perspectives. We must strive to climb for the higher ground, so as to get an overview on life which allows us to see its overall pattern. Reach for whatever you consider to be the Gods on a day like today….stretch upwards and outwards, and attempt to consciously make contact with the Higher Powers of our Universe. Try to get a broader perspective on the whole idea of life….. And allow your tensions to slide away, minimised by the grand view you are able to achieve!

Reversed Cards: This card holds special meaning for me, as it played a very large role in my own personal healing journey. I am a domestic violence survivor, and while I was healing my many emotional and mental scars, this card would pop up a lot in the mirror position. This is the card of escape but with mental baggage. The problem with any abuse is that it lingers. It conditions us to think, feel, and react in very specific ways. Holding on to this unwanted mental baggage is a choice, and letting it go takes time and consistent effort. The Six of Swords in the mirror aspect shows us where we are in that letting-go journey: heading away from the past and into an unknown future.

Portable Magic: Why the Tarot has four court cards in each suit, and common playing cards have only three court cards in each suit, remains a mystery. All explanations are conjectural. It used to be widely assumed that the Knights represented court cards that had been lost from common playing decks at some point in their evolution, but now that we know playing cards are older than the Tarot, this explanation seems less plausible. In any case, traditional Italian and Spanish playing card decks contain a King, Knight, and Page in each suit, and omit the Queen, making the question even more obscure.

Portable Magic: Your significator must always be chosen from among the court cards, and should be the card that most closely expresses your nature. It should be the court card in harmony with your personality, and need not reflect your physical appearance, although older men should usually choose a significator from the Kings and mature women a significator from among the Queens, whereas younger men should choose one of the Knights and younger women one of the Pages. Always use the same court card for your significator. Set it upright, from your own perspective, in the center of the circle.
