You may have been ignoring your spiritual side. Even the most logical secular humanist in the world must realize that there is an esoteric side to the world that is not necessarily immediately visible to the eye or logical. Explore spiritual belief systems that interest you, even if you don’t buy into them. Open your mind. If you think it’s already open, look more deeply and open further.

The Page of Swords can sometimes stand in for a literal person in our lives. If so, in this case, The Page will represent a person who is younger than the querent, who is likely to have hair on the darker end of the spectrum. The Page also often indicates that a message is coming. In this instance, it may not be what you were hoping to hear.

Complete Book of Tarot: Unfortunately, the Devil card has become linked to views of dour theologians who believe that bodily pleasure is sinful in the eyes of the deity who ironically created the human body with all its capacity for enjoyment. The Devil card teaches us that seeking pleasure in life is perfectly acceptable, so long as it is done with moderation (which is why Temperance, card XIV, precedes card XV, the Devil). When this card appears in a reading, it’s time to lighten up and delight in activities that you may have avoided because of a rigid sense of obligation or morality. The Devil whispers in your ear: ‘If it feels good, do it.’ Thus, if there is a cherished worldly ambition you have held back from pursing, now is the time to go for it. The Devil simply cautions you to maintain a spiritual perspective so that you can avoid becoming ensnared by your material ambitions and adopt a twisted view of the world. Along these lines, a recent survey of a thousand parents in the UK found that despite the popular notion that money, professional success, and material possessions are essential for a happy life, 95 percent of them stated that the key to happiness lies in ‘spending quality family time together.’ 39

Portable Magic: In the Golden Dawn Tarot, the Pages (called Princesses by the Golden Dawn) have a somewhat different attribution from the other court cards. They are known as the Thrones of the Aces of their suits. Thus, the Page of Swords is the Throne of the Ace of Swords. This difference reflects the distinction between the three higher active elements that occupy zones above the Earth, and the inert and motionless Earth element, which has no active higher zone. The Pages, in their own nature considered apart from their suits are of the Earth element. They mark the transition between the court cards and the number cards. After them follow the Aces, which are the roots of the powers of the lower, earthly elements expressed in the ten number cards of each suit.

Complete Book of Tarot: The idea of a tarot card having ‘dignity’ comes from the Order of the Golden Dawn and is based on the philosophy of the four elements. When we speak of a card having dignity, we are referring to the card’s rank or relative importance with respect to the other cards in a spread. This topic can be a bit complicated, and beginners may wish to skim this section and return to it later when they have a better grasp of the cards.

Complete Book of Tarot: For example, the Empress (Venus) in the ninth house of foreign affairs might suggest a pleasant trip abroad. If the next card in the ninth house happens to be the Four of Pentacles, this trip might cost more than the querent wants to spend. The Golden Dawn associated the Four of Pentacles with the sun in Capricorn, suggesting that the querent might travel to a sunny clime (the sun) and manage trip expenses with good business sense (Capricorn).
