Elements of the Psychic World: In the early twentieth century, Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974) developed what he called ‘psychosynthesis’; an approach to psychology that focuses on achieving a coming together of various parts of the personality. Tarot Triumphs: The numbering in the Marseilles-type traditional pack is consistent, starting with the Magician as no. 1, ending with the World as no. 21, and designating the Fool as either unnumbered or 0. But this was not so in the earliest packs that remain; numbering in the first fifty years or more of recorded Tarot examples was either nonexistent or inconsistent. In certain packs, too, some of the cards were numbered, while others were not. So we can’t rely on an original, historic number sequence to point the way to the intentions of the earliest Tarot makers. However, since the numbering in the Marseilles version did settle down into the sequence that we now know, from the early sixteenth century onward, it seems that those who designed and used the cards were by that time content with the order, whether they understood this to have an implicit meaning or not.
