61-Knight of Swords – Upright Golden Deck

Your Chosen Card – Knight of Swords Upright Golden Deck

Knights correspond to the element Fire, which suggests action, enterprise, movement, novelty, and challenge coming into your life. When upright, the Knight of Swords prompts you to take decisive action to defend your rights and protect whatever you hold dear. This clever and assertive knight makes a good ally and a formidable opponent. Like the protagonist of Shakespeare’s Henry V (1598), the Knight of Swords rallies you with the words: ‘Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.’ He readily connects the dots and is able to cut to the chase in any situation. His arrival is sometimes accompanied by the passing of misfortune. In many ways the Knight of Swords resembles Sir Galahad of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 1834 poem of the same name:

Keywords Upright: Assertive, brave, swift, virile, forceful, eager, courageous, decisive, righteous, formidable, industrious, alert, strategic, clever with words, analytical, discerning, skillful; quick action, debate, strategy, clarity of mind, a sharp intellect, a rush to get things done, making drastic changes, defending one’s rights, charging into battle, cutting away what no longer serves a purpose, adopting a new perspective.

Astrology: Fire of Air.
Associated Trumps: The High Priest and the Lovers.

Complete Book of Tarot: Astrology: Expansive Jupiter (debilitated) in the first decan of airy Gemini, the realm of the Knight of Swords (Fire of Air) and of the Lovers (Gemini). Jupiter is linked to the Wheel of Fortune. Jupiter’s debilitated state in Gemini brings about increase without accompanying good fortune.

Tarot Books

Complete Book of Tarot: The Golden Dawn bases its system on the correspondences between the court cards and the Tetragrammaton Yahveh—Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh—the four Hebrew letters in the name of the deity. The accompanying table illustrates these associations.

Portable Magic: It is convenient to assign elemental Earth to one of the trumps, from a purely practical standpoint. However, it is contrary to the system of correspondences set forth in Sepher Yetzirah, where only three elements are linked with the Hebrew letters, not four. The Golden Dawn members may not have fully grasped that the trumps relate to the active spheres above the fixed realm of the four lower elements, and hence are distinct from the earthly sphere.
