55-Six of Athames – Upright Salem Deck

When upright, the Six of Swords indicates that you are moving away from troubling waters toward less turbulent circumstances with the aid of a strong and skillful oarsman. You are not there yet, and some residual difficulties remain on your journey. Conversely, you may be playing the role of the protective oarsman, helping someone to leave a problematic situation behind, in search of a better life. Complete Book of Tarot: A brief example of an accurate prediction might be useful. In my teens, I did not know my exact time of birth. It was not recorded on my birth certificate, and my father could only recall that I was born in the morning. My mother died when I was eight years old, so I could not ask her. Using a technique I found in an astrology book, I calculated that I must have been born around 9:04 in the morning. Years later I found my father’s notebook in the attic and discovered that he had written: ‘Anthony, born 9:05 AM.’ I was astounded that the astrological calculation was only a minute off from the time recorded in my father’s journal! Either this was an amazing coincidence, or there was some truth to all this astrology stuff.

Complete Book of Tarot: The question was asked by a woman whose son had recently been arrested for a DUI (driving under the influence). The penalties in her state were quite harsh for such an offense and she feared her son might go to prison. Because our time was limited, I had her draw only two cards with the intention of understanding the likely outcome of her son’s day in court. She pulled the Six of Swords and the Ten of Cups, in that order.

Complete Book of Tarot: Although tarot originated as a card game and work of art for wealthy Italian families, it may have been used for a rudimentary form of divination as early as the sixteenth century. The Italian nobility of the 1500s played a game called tarrochi appropriation which players drew cards at random, using the images on those cards to inspire the writing of poetic verses about each other’s destiny. These cards were called sortes, an Italian word meaning fate, lot, destiny, or chance. Over time the tarot became a tool for divination.

Complete Book of Tarot: The Marseille deck consists of twenty-two trumps, forty pip cards, and sixteen court cards. The trumps are in the same arrangement as most modern decks with the exception of Justice (La Justice) falling in position VIII whereas Strength (La Force) falls in position XI. The Fool (Le Mat) is unnumbered. Today’s Magician, trump I, was called Le Bateleur (the Juggler, Mountebank, Showman, Buffoon). Trump II was La Papesse, the Female Pope, whereas trump V was Le Pape, the Pope of the Catholic Church. In addition, today’s Tower, trump XVI, was labeled Le Maison Dieu, the House of God. Finally, Trump XIII, the modern Death card, was without name and was referred to as L’Arcane sans nom (the unnamed trump).
