33-Knight of Wands – Upright Rider Waite Deck

Your Chosen Card – Knight of Wands Upright Rider Waite Deck

Knights correspond to the element Fire, which suggests action, enterprise, movement, novelty, and excitement coming into your life. When upright, the Knight of Wands advises you to get ready for an exciting ride as he adds spice to your life. Change is in the air. This knight loves to travel. He readily picks up roots to move to a new location, so a change of job or residence is possible. The Wand Knight is full of surprises, and you can expect the unexpected. Hollywood actor James Dean might be considered a prototype for this very fiery knight.

Creative Tarot: For Waite, there is a higher purpose for a person’s existence, and mysticism is a tool to find that purpose and follow it. To help that process along best, he would need a tarot deck that was designed with these goals specifically in mind. The deck, he thought, needed to be reworked with an emphasis on its symbolism and symbolism’s connection to the intuition. First, he needed an artist.

Tarot Triumphs: Although the jongleurs peaked in the thirteenth century and were in decline by the fifteenth century, the period from which we have the first Tarot examples, they were by no means extinct. I have no direct evidence to show that the jongleurs had an early version of Tarot in their possession, but some of the Tarot Triumphs seem to be closely linked to their type of showman activities. At the very least, their work could have provided strong images for some of the early Trumps, as witnessed by the early creators of Tarot at jongleur performances. Or they could have been retained in folk memory as stock images even if the actual performances were not so prevalent anymore, just as we still have strong and rather romantic images of the highwayman, pirate, wandering minstrel, and May Queen in our heritage, even if they no longer exist in real life in that form.
