Family, Friends & Relationships:

Just like with the Strength card, you may even more so be in the frame of mind that you need some time alone – don’t be afraid to take it. Even if it’s just a five minute walk around the house so that you can clear your head. This is also very much a card about ‘trying very hard to do the right thing.’ Just make sure that ‘doing the right thing’ includes doing what is right for you personally, and not just worrying about the wants and needs of others.

Card Meanings: Caution, Prudence, Soul Searching, Introspection, Withdrawal, Vigilance, Spiritual Enlightenment, Inner Guidance, Self-Reflection, Contemplation, Inner Strength

The Hermit is an extremely spiritual card, and often has to do with institutions and large organizations – everything from a bank to the entire Christian Church. This card indicates spirituality even if you are an atheist. It’s in whatever sense the word ‘spirit’ makes sense to you, even if for you ‘spirit’ equates to ’emotion.’ You may be trying hard to figure out what the ‘truth’ is about someone (or some matter), don’t feel that you have to do it all on your own, ask for help if you need it to gain different perspectives, more information, etc.

Reversed Cards: The Hermit, regardless of its orientation, is rather a protective figure. He is in many ways a guide, someone who will show you the safest way to your destination. Now, that may not always be the easiest way, but it will be the safest. In this respect, he acts like a shamanistic tool, someone you can journey with, someone who lights the way. The Hermit knows his territory well and understands you are merely a visitor. Which is odd when you think about it—how come you are only a visitor in the domain of the Hermit? Should this not be a space sacred to the self ? It is; you just have not stepped foot here before, and you haven’t a clue how to navigate this new space. Think of the Hermit in the protection aspect as your orientation day to you. Here you get a chance to familiarize yourself with the new landscape. You get told some of the basic rules of engagement with the inner world and then you are shown where all the important exits are if you find you need to leave. How long your orientation lasts is up to you. Rest assured that regardless of the length of your stay, the Hermit will not leave you alone on this inner voyage until you give him the all clear.

Reversed Cards: The Hermit knows better than anyone how locking others out on purpose can be harmful. It is harmful to you, and it is harmful to those you suddenly block from your life for no real reason. Not that there aren’t times when you should leave people behind, but here in the shadow aspect, that is not the case. Here you are doing it on purpose as a form of punishment. You have withdrawn your love, your loyalty, and your support. You have rescinded the energy your relationships need to sustain themselves, so don’t be surprised if this all backfires, as you have no control how the other person or people will react to this shutdown of yours. Some might hang in there and see if you come to your senses. But some people can’t live without the energy you just cut them off from, which means they will find it somewhere else. So before you dig in and make the shadow aspect of the Hermit your permanent home, consider the real consequences of your actions. Are you really sure you are ready to be alone? Are you certain that you can continue on without the love and support of the person or people you have turned your back on? And if so, how do you believe this will nourish and support you moving forward? The Hermit in the shadow aspect can be very destructive. Remember, this is a karmic number: what you do know won’t affect just this life but the next one as well.
