Book Details
Elements of the Psychic World: In his later years Crowley was a victim of poor health, drug addiction and financial trouble. He earned a meagre living from his writing, since much of it is incoherent and rambling, but many continue to read his work today. His most important work, The Book of Law, was allegedly communicated from the Egyptian god Horus’s spirit messenger Aiwass. Central to this book is the Law of Thelma: ‘Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law’, which Crowley maintained meant doing what you must do and nothing else. His other important work is Magick in Theory and Practise (1929), which many practitioners consider to be a fine work on ceremonial magic. (He spelled ‘magic’ as ‘magick’ to distinguish it from stage magic.)

Portable Magic: As you touch the significator, be fully aware of the energy of desire that fills your heart centre, and imagine that you touch your chest with your right hand. As you touch the card of realization, on the astral level cast your right hand away from your chest toward the glowing triangle of light, releasing a bolt of blinding white radiance from your heart centre and directing it with your hand through the centre of the triangle. This lance composed of the force of your will pierces the upright triangle that floats in the air, so that the entire triangle fills and glows with brightness.

Portable Magic: In an ordinary ritual, such as the ritual to obtain a business contract described as an example in the previous chapter, you use your will as a psychic lance to open the gateway in the triangle to the higher level of universal spirit where magic finds its realization. The realizer tarot cards on the triangle act as a template to shape your will into a form that accurately expresses your ritual purpose. The realization of the purpose immediately reflects from this higher level of spirit, which exists above the astral level, down to the material world where it plays itself out in your life. The tarot cards on the triangle are used to shape and guide the energy of your magical desire, but they are not themselves the focus of that desire.

Tarot Triumphs: But even if anima mundi, or the world soul, acts as a good label for this card, we will miss something unless we return to the implied juxtaposition of the two figures who can both lay claim to their place within this image: the dancing girl and Christ. It brings a final opportunity in the sequence of Tarot Triumphs to grasp the paradox and find yet more avenues to explore in understanding the symbol. In this light, I suggest that the World as Tarot Triumph is both male and female, sacred and secular, and that it marries elements from opposite poles of experience. All the strife between different forces—think back to the Lover and his choice, and the cruel rotation of the Wheel of Fortune—is resolved here. There is reconciliation and integration of energies and values. As the last numbered card in the pack, it therefore indicates union and completeness. The spiritual world and the material world are conjoined, and the World can thus remind us of the beauty to be found in the commonplace.
