Tarot Books

Creative Tarot: Which is exactly what the Italian writer Italo Calvino did. He was not a specialist in the cards. He stated on more than one occasion that his interest in tarot was not scholarly, nor was he interested in learning how to read the cards skillfully. He found the people on the cards fascinating, as well as all the different interpretations—all the ways a story could be told simply by the patterns that one could create by laying out the cards randomly.

Complete Book of Tarot: Sometimes the term ‘tarot’ is applied loosely to any deck used for divination. Technically speaking, most dictionaries define tarot as a set of seventy-eight cards consisting of twenty-two trump cards, forty pip cards, and sixteen court cards. Nonetheless, several decks have appeared under the rubric of ‘tarot’ without the classical structure of the standard Marseille deck. Such decks can be considered nonstandard tarots.

Tarot Triumphs: As explained earlier, only the twenty-two Tarot Trumps of the Major Arcana are used in this book. Any references from now on to ‘the pack’ will refer to the Triumphs, unless specifically indicated otherwise. You may wish to extend your Tarot readings later to include the four suits, but even so, working first with the Trumps will give you a good basis for this. Like many other Tarot practitioners, I prefer to just use the twenty-two Trumps. As I have found, and the Fool’s Mirror layout proves in chapter seven, it is not essential to bring in the four suits at all. The Triumphs stand as a viable set in their own right; they have an independent existence and were not generated along with the four-suit playing-card pack. The suits are based more on numerical values and court cards; their interpretation tends to be more dependent on pre-formulated attributions, which can lead to a shallower kind of divination. I am not saying that the four suits cannot be interpreted with a genuine degree of significance, but it is hard to do this without a thorough study of the meaning of number and its possibilities for interpretation. Nearly all Tarot practitioners would, in any case, agree that the Tarot Trumps have more power and weight in a reading than the cards of the suits, even when those suits are also represented as images, as in the case of the Rider-Waite pack.
