As I said in my first examination of this card, the Lord of Ruin is much more about what we invite into our lives with negative and unhelpful thought patterns, than it is about outside events. When we pay close attention to the things we wish ourselves, ensuring that our thoughts are as bright as possible, we attract goodness and positive energy into life. If, on the other hand, we are careless in examining what we think, feel, desire and dream of….allowing ourselves to slide into habits that diminish us, living more by fear than by love…..then we draw bad things into life. The trickiest bit about this positive thinking business is that its effects project into the future…and we are strongly affected by our experience of the present. If things seem to be going wrong, life is heavy and difficult, we tend to have negative reactions to things. Unfortunately, though, having those negative reactions in the present condemns us to further difficulties in the future.

So you can see it is essential to somehow break out of the downward spiral. Positive thinking is a habit. So is negative thinking. And, as with all habits, it can be very awkward to change the pattern. Constant vigilance is required. We need to monitor our thoughts and feelings VERY carefully. And as soon as we discover that we are starting to think dark thoughts we need to pounce, snatching that thought up and determining where it has come from. This applies as much to our deepest inner responses as it does to our responses to external stimuli. Life is always throwing the curve ball at you, just to see if you can catch it. And harmonising yourself with the rhythm of life is – beside being the greatest reward of all – a very big challenge. It does help, though, to try to interpret events in terms of your own reactions……this gives you a good reason to watch yourself carefully in the present. Try this – find something that you currently feel unhappy, frustrated, shocked, hurt about….. Take a good look at the overview of this…..try to separate the differing elements of the problem.

Development for Beginners: When you experience this, it simply means that you have done too much energy work for the day, and you now need to take a breather and get some sleep.

Creative Tarot: I started by drawing one card a day and just seeing what happened during that day. I looked for the situation on the card to show itself in my life. (I write more about this process, and how you can replicate it, in the “How to Do a Reading” chapter.) I would pull the Seven of Wands and then notice how I felt like I was bashing heads against everyone I came in contact with—including my own not-so-helpful thoughts and anxiety. I would pull the Ten of Swords and notice all of the ways I was trying to sustain friendships, relationships, or work projects that were better abandoned.

Reversed Cards: This says a lot about how we all like to view the world: up the right way and in some sort of rational, logical order. The strange thing is, this is not how we actually experience the physical world outside of us. Our perception is questionable at best, and 80 percent of the time we make decisions, take action, and run our lives on our habitual intuitive programing. This basic survival operating system is referred to as ‘System 1’ in Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking, Fast and Slow. Nothing about System 1 is logical, rational, or even right-side up. It does, however, keep us alive. To really dig deeper and tap into the rational part of our mind, we need to switch from System 1 to System 2. This, according to Kahneman, is where our complex understanding comes from and where we make the most informed decisions. It is also somewhere we don’t stay for very long. Working extensively with our System-2 thinking exhausts us and makes us feel depleted. An upside-down card, however, triggers a disturbance in the Force and makes us switch from System 1 to System 2, hence why this seems more difficult and taxing and why we prefer things when they appear right-side up. Yet here in the world of tarot, just like in the rest of the world, we have yet to truly come to terms with the fact that we spend most of our physical life looking at things in reverse. Instead, we view them through the lens of basic survival rather than through the complex lens of rationality.

Elements of the Psychic World: To avoid the accusation of fraud Rhine changed his test procedures and the tester and the subject are now typically placed in separate rooms. To test fo r telepathy the tester goes through the deck, concentrating on one symbol at a time, and the subject writes down the symbols that come to his or her mind. In clairvoyance testing the tester selects some cards and places them face down while the subject attempts to record the hidden symbols. In
