Tarot Card Decks

The deck of cards known as the tarot is divided into two parts: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards, each separately titled. The Minor Arcana is a combination of four suits; each suit is comprised of cards numbered from one to ten, plus court cards of Page, Knight, Queen and
King. The four suits of the Minor Arcana are most commonly known as Cups, Pentacles, Wands and Swords. Each suit of the Minor Arcana has a meaning. Traditionally the swords indicate ill fortune or difficulties, the pentacles indicate financial and material success, the cups indicate good fortune and love and the wands indicate enterprise and knowledge.

Portable Magic: Even though playing cards are older than Tarot cards, the suit symbols used in the Tarot predate the suit symbols of modern playing cards, which were simplified by French playing card designers to make printing the cards less costly. Originally, playing cards employed the same suit symbols as Tarot cards. Around 1470, half a century or so after the invention of the Tarot, French card makers came up with the modern suit symbols we still use today, and these eventually replaced the older symbols on playing cards throughout most of Europe. Tarot designers were a more conservative group and chose to retain the original symbols.

Complete Book of Tarot: Opinion is divided about whether one can predict the timing of events with the tarot. My own view based on experience is that the cards do not pinpoint exact times when a specific event is likely to occur. Astrology is more useful for this purpose. Instead, I view the tarot as a technique that empowers querents to clarify situations and effectively make decisions that will influence their future. What will happen in the future depends on how we think, feel, act, and decide in the present. If we change our pattern of thinking and our belief systems, the future will change with them. Let’s review some of the timing techniques suggested in the literature.
