It’s helpful to approach the numerology of the tarot as a cycle. Even numbers are often stable and enduring, while odd numbers generally embody various states of change and instability. The tarot is actually cyclical, so each ending also signifies a new beginning. Understanding the numerology of the tarot can provide a helpful window into the reading of the cards. Beyond learning the facts of numerology and the cards themselves, your accuracy in interpreting them will depend on your intuition and/or psychic abilities. With neither, a tarot reading will not mean much or could actually be quite harmful and a lack of empathy would suggest perhaps this is the wrong path to be on.

The Golden Tarot Major Arcana

Major Arcana cards show up when things are happening that pull us towards a certain destiny or path. Many Major Arcana cards in a reading is often a sign that our Spirit Guides and Angels are working behind the scenes to set everything up for us so that we can live the lives we are destined to live. While the Minor Arcana cards focus on the everyday actions and decisions you must face, these Major Arcana cards reveal messages about the bigger picture of your life and its long-term direction. A major arcana card represents an energy that is deep, strong, decisive or long-term. When a major arcana card appears in a reading, you have tapped into a powerful energy in some area of your life. The minor arcana cards do not carry the same weight, but they are still important. They chart the ups and downs of daily life and register changes in feelings and thoughts. These dramas are gripping while they occur, but they pass with time as new concerns take their place.

Comprised of imagery from the European masters paintings, Golden Tarot cards pay tribute to artwork of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. The Golden Tarot of Klimt is one of the best for artwork. Golden Tarot aims to reconnect the Tarot aesthetically and esoterically to its origins in early-renaissance Italy. From a time of violence, pestilence and oppression came poignant images of gentle beauty and human frailty.

Complete Book of Tarot: From Italy, the tarot deck traveled to France where it found safe haven in the city of Marseille, a major center for the production of tarot decks in the following centuries. In Italy this deck was originally called the carte da trionfi, that is, the trump or ‘triumph cards’—a reference to the allegorical cards numbered I to XXI (with or without the inclusion of the Fool.)Historian Gertrude Moakley noted that the fifteenth-century tarot deck painted by Bonifacio Bembo followed the pattern of ancient Roman triumphal marches (trionfi) celebrated in Petrarch’s famous fourteenth-century poem ‘I Trionfi.’ Images of triumphal marches can still be seen on the triumphal arches of the Forum in Rome.

Creative Tarot: The Marseilles is also when the tarot began to take on a more, let’s say, mystical quality. Alchemical and astrological imagery began to show up on the cards, and it’s around this time we have the first evidence that the cards were used for divination as well as game playing. Robert M. Place, in his book The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, points to a cycle of Venetian sonnets called the Merlini Cocai Sonnets (Cocai being the pseudonym of the sixteenth-century Italian poet Teofilo Folengo) as containing the first written record of the cards being used for fortune-telling. In the sonnets, the Major Arcana cards are used in a spread to foresee what will happen to the characters of the story.

Complete Book of Tarot: Over the years the term divination has broadened to include any method that ‘attempts to foretell the future or to discern unknown matters, as though by supernatural means.’ 1 In this definition, the word ‘supernatural’ refers to methods that cannot be proved by the scientific method—that is, methods hard science cannot yet or perhaps never will be able to explain. Scientists regard such techniques as ‘pseudoscience’ because they fall outside the area of knowledge the scientific method is designed to explain. There can be little doubt that, together with practices like Freudian psychoanalysis, divination with tarot cards is one such pseudo-science. On the other hand, many individuals testify that they have benefited greatly from tarot readings as well as from sessions with a psychoanalyst.
